Stephen Jota Children's Hostel

Picture
In 2011 we celebrated our 10th Anniversary and looked back at all that God has done since the first classroom block at the Children's Centre opened in 2001.  Our celebrations were held in the grounds of the Children's Hostel.  It is amazing to see the transformation that takes place in the children as they become part of a caring community.

The Children's Hostel can accommodate up to 200 children and is home to the children who have no families, looked after by Matron Grace and her helpers.  As soon as you enter the gates you can feel and hear the joy and laughter of the children.

Work on the Hostel started in February 2006 when plans were approved by the Ugandan government.  The foundations were completed in July 2006 and the ground floor walls were being built.  In April 2007 water was laid on from a natural water source in the grounds and pumped to 7 distribution points in the community.

By July of the same year the roof and shell of the building were completed.  Electricity was connected, walls plastered and tiled, windows and doors fitted, toilets and showers installed.  A separate building was erected to house the kitchen in order to minimise any fire risk. Most of the work was carried out by local workers but volunteers from UK and US helped with painting and decorating the dormitories.

In July 2008 we had a Day of Celebration as the Children's Hostel was officially opened.  Nsumbi trustees and visitors from UK joined with local dignitaries, village elders, pastors and leaders and of course the children and community.  We enjoyed a sumptuous African meal and the children entertained us with singing, drama and traditional dance.

"If we don't show the children love they will never know in the whole world that there is anything called love.  That's why I want to build the Children's Centre to show the love of God to the children in our country."  Pastor Stephen Jota, Uganda.
