Welcome to NSUMBI TrustUganda, a country a little smaller than UK, has a population of 26 million, 50% of whom are under the age of 14. Since independence in 1962, the people of Uganda have suffered the ravages of dictatorship, civil war and the AIDS pandemic. The last 20 years under President Museveni have seen an economic stabilization and the introduction of a successful AIDS programme, but over a third of the population still lives below the poverty line. Hundreds of thousands of people live with the HIV/AIDS virus, mostly in the economically productive age group. Households living with AIDS spend much of their time and any income they have caring for the sick. Often it is the grandparents who, having watched their own children die, are left to care for young children. Only half of Ugandans have access to good health care and the quality of care, education and nutrition amongst children is very poor. NSUMBI Trust works in partnership with the Stephen Jota Childrens Centre to give hope to children, young people and families by providing a secure and caring environment for rehabilitation, education and recreation. |
